Diastasis repair

Repairing Diastasis with Tummy Tuck Surgery

Diastasis recti is a condition where the abdominal muscles are separated and no longer located next to each other. The most common cause of diastasis is pregnancy, and no amount of exercise can reverse the condition. When diastasis is caused by pregnancy there is a significant change in shape of the abdominal wall, even in extremely thin patients. This leaves the abdomen looking swollen. The condition is quite common, and studies have shown that it occurs in 35-62% of women.

The only way to resolve diastasis is through a surgical re-approximation of the muscles.  A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty surgery, is the ideal procedure because it not only corrects the separated muscles but also removes the excess skin that is associated with a diastasis. During tummy tuck surgery, the surgeon connects the left and right side of the abdominal muscles, recreating abdominal tightness. This provides an improved contour of the abdomen while enhancing self-confidence in women who have experienced diastasis recti.

Are You A Candidate for A Tummy Tuck?

If you have diastasis caused by pregnancy, you may be a candidate for tummy tuck surgery. To be considered an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck procedure, you should:

  • Be physically healthy
  • Be at a stable weight
  • Be a non-smoker
  • Have realistic expectations for what the procedure can do to improve your appearance

It should be noted that tummy tuck surgery for diastasis repair is not a procedure for the removal of excessive amounts of intra-abdominal fat. It is only done to reconnect the separated sides of the abdomen in order to create a tighter abdominal area. The best way to determine if you’re a candidate for a tummy tuck to repair your diastasis is to schedule a consultation with one of our surgeons.

What You Can Expect With Tummy Tuck Surgery for Diastasis

The process begins with a consultation with a surgeon. You will have an opportunity to discuss your goals and expectations with the doctor, and ask any relevant questions you have about the surgery.

During the consultation the surgeon will:

  • Review your medical history and any medications you are taking
  • Discuss how tummy tuck surgery can correct diastasis
  • Provide recommendations based on your needs and your goals

The surgeon will listen to your needs, expectations, and your desired outcome from the surgery. The doctor will review the surgical options that are available to you, and you will have an opportunity to tour our state-of-the-art facility located in Hertfordshire and meet with our caring staff that will be part of your team.

How the Surgery is Performed

The surgery is performed under IV sedation and takes anywhere from 1-3 hours. You will be asleep during the surgery. The skin will be dissected up toward the rib cage, the muscles are tightened and the belly button is repositioned while excess skin is removed. This helps to dramatically improve the appearance and strength of the abdominal area. The surgeon may recommend having liposuction along with the tummy tuck to provide optimal results.

The surgeon will use innovative techniques and tools, such as an anaesthetic block that not only helps to keep you comfortable during your surgery but helps to significantly reduce your pain after you wake up from your surgery as well.

After the excess fat and skin are removed, the remaining skin from the upper abdomen is released and pulled down over the open area to close it. Skin is tightened, muscles are tightened as required, and the belly is flatter. Once the procedure is completed, the incision will be sutured and bandaged. You may be given an elastic bandage or compression garment to wear in order to minimize swelling to support the abdomen as it heals.

Following your surgery, you will recover in one of our partner hotels. You will receive a care package from us and our staff is available to you while you stay with us.

You will see your surgeon the day after your surgery and at specified intervals during the weeks following your surgery. This is done so that we can monitor your recovery process, and to ensure that you have the best results possible.

Drain-Free Tummy Tuck

While other surgeons may offer abdominoplasty, our surgeons offer patients a drain-free tummy tuck. This is an innovative surgical technique that was developed by London Lipo’s surgeons to improve the results of a traditional tummy tuck procedure. Unlike other abdominoplasty procedures, London Lipo’s surgeons do not use surgical drains at the incision site after the surgery.

A drain-free tummy tuck provides patients with a faster recovery, less discomfort, a lower and a better-concealed scar that is thinner than one found in a traditional tummy tuck.

During the surgery, your surgeon will use innovative technologies and tools, such as anaesthetic blocks that not only help to keep you comfortable during your surgery but help to significantly reduce your pain after you wake up from your surgery as well.

Recovery From Your Procedure

The tummy tuck surgery will leave your abdomen bruised and swollen, which will diminish over a period of one to two weeks. Recovery requires rest and taking it easy. The first two days following the surgery are usually the most painful.  After the first two days, you’ll notice a dramatic improvement in how you feel. Because of the innovative surgical techniques used, your discomfort will be easily controlled with prescription medication only.

During your recovery you should avoid strenuous physical activity; this is especially important because your abdominal muscles have been repaired. You may need to limit your physical activity from four to six weeks.

After your tummy tuck procedure, you will have a flatter, firmer abdominal contour that is proportionate to your individual body type and weight. The actual results will be hidden due to swelling at first, but you will begin to see your new slimmer profile within one to two weeks after surgery. Depending on the surgery, it may take anywhere from several weeks or months to see the final results.

During recovery, it is critical that you refrain from smoking. Smoking deprives your body of oxygen, which increases the risk of wound breakdown and infection following the surgery.

The goal of a tummy tuck is to repair the diastasis and provide you with a tighter, smoother and more attractive abdomen. Your love handles will be smaller, and you will look more fit, youthful and healthier.
