Facelift

Do you want to turn back the clock and restore your youthful appearance? A facelift can help make this a reality.
As a result of factors such as sun exposure, gravity, dietary choices or simply ageing, the face can often make us look older than we actually are. The skin begins to lose elasticity and as a result, the eyebrows droop down and skin becomes loser around the cheeks and jawbone. While a facelift cannot halt the ageing process, it can take years off your appearance, giving you a rejuvenated, youthful face.

What is a facelift?

A facelift refers to a series of procedures which work to alter the appearance of the face. These procedures can take place on the jawline, lower face, cheeks and neck. An upper facelift also addresses areas such as the eyebrows and forehead. There is even a mini facelift, where minor alterations will be made to the cheeks and jowls.

There are numerous benefits to undergoing a facelift. A facelift will tighten loose skin, resulting in a more youthful, vibrant appearance. The tightening of skin will also remove wrinkles, lessening the signs of ageing. Our surgeons will also reposition fat deposits in the face in order for you to be able to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing face possible.

Candidates

To be considered an appropriate candidate for a facelift, you will need to be over 18 years old, be physically and mentally healthy, and be a non-smoker, or be able to stop smoking at least two weeks before surgery.

While there is no maximum age limit to a facelift, it is important to note that as a result of skin laxity results will differ for those who are older. You will still need to have some skin laxity in order to be considered appropriate for a facelift.

Those who may want to have a facelift include those who have:
– Sagging skin
– Creases below the lower eyelids and along the side of the nose to the mouth
– Loose skin and/or fatty deposits beneath the chin
– Loose, saggy skin on the jowls

You will also need to ensure you have realistic expectations about what a facelift can achieve for you.

Surgery

Prior to having a facelift, you will be given a general anaesthetic. This means that you will be asleep during the procedure, and you will be unable to feel any pain or discomfort.

A facelift involves incisions around the ears and in the temple. The skin from the lower face is then raised. If any liposuction and fat grafting are required, that will take place at this point. Any excess skin is then removed, and the incisions are sutured. The incisions will be made in the natural skin folds and will be behind the ears, so any scars will be minimally noticeable.

Recovery

After the surgery, you will have a loose-fitting bandage applied to the incision area. It is normal to experience some bruising and swelling, especially where the incisions were made. This will improve over the following week. You will be given pain medication to help alleviate any discomfort. You will have to ensure you sleep with your head elevated and avoid sleeping on your sides. You will need to avoid any strenuous physical activity for two to three weeks.

FAQS

Is this a day procedure?

At London Lipo Institute we perform a facelift as a day case. You will be able to return home once the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off.

Can I have a facelift?

You will need to be over 18 years old, be in good physical and mental health, and be a non-smoker or be able to stop smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.

Most patients will have signs of ageing they are wanting to remove, such as sagging skin around the eyes, cheeks, jowls and neck. Patients are generally between 40-60 years old, however, there is no age limit and patients who are older may also be suitable for a facelift.

Should I have a full facelift or a mini facelift?

This depends on how much you are wanting to change. If you only have a slight amount of excess skin and tissue that needs to be removed, you may be more suitable for a mini facelift. However, if you are wanting to make more drastic changes to your appearance, you should opt for a facelift.

How long does the facelift procedure take?

A facelift takes around three hours to complete.

Will I have scars?

A facelift involves several incisions, so you will have scars. However, the incisions will be made in natural folds of the skin and will be made around the ears. As a result, there will not be any visible scarring.

What will the recovery be like?

After the procedure, you will have a dressing applied to your face, which will need to be worn for the first few days. This will then be removed and replaced with an elastic garment.
It is normal to experience swelling and bruising following the surgery. This can be helped with cold compression, and if needed, pain medication.

When can I start exercising again?

You will have to avoid any vigorous physical exercise, which includes any heavy lifting and bending, for at least two weeks following the procedure.
