Gluteal Augmentation – Fat Transfer vs Implants

Gluteal augmentation is a way to change the size and shape of your buttocks surgically. Fat transfers and buttock implants are the most popular methods of changing the size and shape of your buttocks. These methods are intended to give a natural curve to the buttocks either through an implant or fat transfer.

Reasons why someone may undergo gluteal augmentation

Weight loss – When a large amount of weight is lost there will normally we a large amount of skin left. This skin may be very loose and saggy causing discomfort. This normally happens in previously fatty areas such as the buttocks, breasts, stomach, thighs and stomach.

  • Increase in size – People may just want to increase the size of their buttocks. Within certain cultures, it is considered very beautiful to have a larger behind so some people may be doing it for this reason.

  • Flatness – A person may be born with a naturally slimmer figure which may cause a flatter behind. People may not have an issue with this, however, some women may feel like their figure may need to be curvier so they opt for surgery.

Buttock implants should mainly be used in the case of insufficient fat deposits for a Brazilian Butt Lift. The implant is made out of soft silicone to give a natural feel. The implant is placed under the muscle to prevent movement and an unnatural look. Using buttock implants gives a more feminine contoured look to your buttocks to enhance your profile. This procedure is usually carried out under general anaesthesia; once the patient is asleep two medium sized incisions are made between each buttock cheek in the midline. This incision goes through the gluteus muscle to create a pocket large enough for the implant. Once the implant is inserted the incision is then closed and then repeated on the other buttock.

However, we do not use implants as they carry a large risk of infection and ruptures.

Fat Transfer

Fat transfer to the buttocks is done using liposuction transferring fat from one area of the body to the buttocks. A fat transfer gives an all-natural enlargement to the buttocks.  The procedure firsts starts with the fat harvesting. At our clinic, we use the tumescent anaesthetic technique. The patient is injected with numbing fluids in the areas where the fat will be removed (local anaesthesia) Liposuction is then used to remove the fat. Once all of the fat is collected it is that purified and filtered so it is ready for injection. The healthy fat is then put into a syringe which is then injected into certain areas of the buttocks to enlarge it.
