How to choose the best plastic surgeon

When you’re researching plastic surgery, one of the biggest decisions you will have to make is which surgeon is going to perform your surgery. This decision can often not be as easy as it sounds.

So what do you need to do to ensure you choose the best plastic surgeon?

1. Make sure they are registered

You will want to make sure you are going to a legitimate plastic surgeon. If you are looking within the U.K., you will need to make sure the surgeon is registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).

You not only need to check the registration of the surgeon but the clinic they work for as well. The clinic will need to be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). This is an independent body which regulates the health services in England.

You should be able to find evidence of the surgeon and clinic being registered online. However, you should feel comfortable asking the surgeon to provide proof of this registration.

To receive the best quality surgery, it is recommended you avoid going to a surgeon and clinic who is not registered.

2. Research the surgeon

Before meeting the surgeon, do a bit of research on them. By searching their name you may be able to find their personal website or social media accounts. Some may list their education and/or employment history. This will give you a good idea of where they received their qualifications from and how long they have been performing surgeries.

You may also be able to find reviews of the surgeon and the clinic, which will help you to get a good understanding of the experiences other patients have had with this particular surgeon.

3. Make sure they have experience in the area of your procedure

So you’ve found out the surgeon is registered and they’ve been working in the cosmetic surgery field for years. But have they actually been performing your surgery? Many cosmetic surgeons will have specialities and won’t perform every surgery. For example, some may perform breast surgeries, but will not perform facial surgeries. See if any of the reviews are for the surgery which you are having. During your consultation, you may also wish to ask your surgeon how many times they have performed your particular surgery. Even if they have amazing reviews and many years of experience, you may not feel comfortable going to a surgeon who has never performed your procedure.

4. Make sure you are comfortable around them

Once you’ve done your research it’s time to book in for a consultation. This will give you the opportunity to meet with the surgeon and ask any questions you have about the surgeon and the procedure. Take note of how you feel during and after the consultation. Some surgeons may have a very quick consultation and won’t take into consideration any of your questions or concerns.

If you feel uncomfortable around the surgeon or feel like they haven’t answered all of your questions, you are under no obligation to go ahead with surgery. You may wish to attend consultations with several clinics and surgeons. This will allow you to compare surgeons and see who you feel most comfortable with.

5. Do you trust the rest of the staff?

Don’t just take note of how you feel with the surgeon; notice how the rest of the staff acts as well. Chances are you will have to communicate with people other than the surgeon. You will generally have to deal with nurses, receptionists or patient consultants. These staff members are the ones who will be able to book in future appointments for you and will help you throughout your recovery period. If you are having issues with any of the other staff, you may wish to go to another clinic.

Following these tips will ensure you get the best plastic surgeon and achieve the best possible outcome.
