Is old age sneaking up on you?

From your first grey hair to bigger ears and nose – how is old age sneaking up on you?

Everyone knows that the first grey hair and prominent laughter lines are obvious signs of old age. But did you know your ears, nose and feet also continue to grow with your age? Yes, if your ears, nose or feet start looking bigger, then that could also be indications of ageing.

So why are your ears and nose growing?

Some believe that the cartilage, a flexible connective tissue our ears are made up of, continues to grow until we die resulting in bigger ears as we age. This is only a common misconception and is, in fact, an attribute of growth in sharks. Unfortunately for us humans, however, it is still true that our ears appear bigger as we get older. The reason behind it is not growing cartilage but gravity. Yes, gravity is the one to be blamed. With old age, the collagen and elastic fibre that make up our cartilage begin to break down causing our ears to stretch and sag. This makes our ear appear longer and larger as they droop. As for our nose, research shows that our nose stops growing after it reaches the adult size, which is usually around the age of 15 and 16. So then the question arises, why does our nose still seem to be growing with age? The reason is that old age affects the elasticity of the skin which makes us lose volume or plumpness from surrounding areas of the face including the cheeks and lips. This results in our ears and nose appearing larger next to them.

How can cosmetic surgery help prevent signs of old age?

Today, many people are consulting plastic surgeons to eliminate the tell-tales of old age as it starts gradually creeping on them, which on average begins in the mid to late-twenties. The latest technology has allowed plastic surgeons to create a lot of procedures to help people maintain or restore their youthful appearance even when the ageing process continues.

Mini Facelift

Ideal for people in their 30s to 40s – mini facelift is a procedure that lifts the mid-face area or the neck through several small incisions. After the procedure, people can achieve a youthful and revitalized appearance and the results normally last for many years. The main benefit of a mini facelift in comparison to a traditional facelift is the short recovery time and most importantly you will experience very little bruising and swelling because of the small incisions.

Rhinoplasty

Most commonly known as ‘nose job’, rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure performed today. It can help reshape your nose which might be growing with old age. This procedure can be used to contour your nose to match the proportion of your changing facial structure which can prevent your nose from appearing bigger.

Ear Correction Surgery

To prevent your ears from appearing larger than your face, ear correction surgery can be done to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears.

Anti-wrinkle Injections

This is a non-surgical option to treat lines and wrinkles to achieve a youthful appearance. Anti-wrinkle injections work as a muscle relaxant and help to remove wrinkles and sad or tired eyes, which usually contributes to an older aged appearance. This procedure is ideal for people with mild to severe wrinkles on the various facial area such as the forehead, eyes, frown lines etc.

Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are used to “fill in” or smooth problematic areas of the face, which appear wrinkled and tend to make a person look older than his or her actual years. Facial fillers are also used to treat a variety of facial areas including smile lines, cheeks, chin, lips, etc.  There are various other facial rejuvenation procedures available today that can help you to maintain or restore your youthful appearance that seems to change with old age.
