Lipofilling for breast cancer survivors

Lipofilling – What is it?

In medical terms, Lipofilling is a plastic surgery procedure in which defects in tissues are filled with autografted fat tissue or fat. During the procedure, liposuction is performed to remove unwanted fat mostly from the buttocks or the abdomen and then the fat is injected back into the body area that needs filling in.

How is lipofilling helping breast cancer survivors?

“I have a better body after breast cancer”, says a breast cancer survivor from Widnes.

A sales and marketing director, 52, was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer. Fortunately, cancer had not spread into her lymph nodes so she had her right breast removed and then embarked on chemotherapy for 6 months. “It wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be. I went bald and I embraced it. I started using a lot of make-up but there’s only so much it can do. I wanted to go back looking like me, my old self.” Fortunately, lipofilling makes it possible for the reconstruction of breasts and the mother of two couldn’t be more excited for it. Many breast cancer survivors go through the same thing as the 52-year-old. They lose their self-esteem as part of their femininity is taken away.

“This was the silver lining!”

The 52-year-old had a lipofilling to rematch both her breasts, a nipple was created from her rib and her areola was tattooed to complete her look. “I thought I was going to look like Frankenstein”, she said, “But the scars healed and faded in time, so I don’t. Breast cancer was the worst thing that could happen to me, but weirdly also the best. I love my new shape and I can even go topless on holidays if I want. That’s how confident I am about my body now, more than I ever used to be before cancer.”

The procedure

Here at London Lipo Institute, we perform lipofilling as a day-case procedure with minimal scarring and quick recovery period. Liposuction is first performed using Lipomatic with our client under tumescent local anaesthesia to remove fat from the body. The fat collected is then injected back into the area that needs lipofilling.
