Surgical weight loss options
There are many reasons why someone may want to lose weight. The main reason why someone may want to or need to lose weight is because of their health. Being overweight or obese has a huge impact on not only our physical appearance but the functioning of our organs.
Why we may need to lose weight
Every person will have a small amount of visceral fat which is fat around the organs which helps to protect them. However, if you are overweight or obese the amount of visceral will depend on your weight. The amount of this fat will impact how your organs work. Your heart and kidneys can be encapsulated in large amounts of fat. This will damage and scar the kidneys which may lead to failure; the heart size will also increase in size but weaken in muscle strength as it needs to work a lot harder to pump more blood around the whole body. This again may cause the heart to fail. Organ failure can ultimately lead to death.
Weight loss options
There are many non-surgical and surgical weight loss options. The most popular weight loss option is dieting and exercise. This will help most people shed the weight needed. However, people may have conditions which may make weight loss much more of a struggle. Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Under-active thyroid and other hormonal based disorders make it much harder for a person to lose weight. This is when surgical options may need to be considered.
Gastric bandThis is a surgery which was created to help with weight loss. The surgeon will place a small band around the upper portion of the stomach to create a smaller pouch to store food. Making the pouch smaller will limit the amount of food you eat by making you feel full quicker.
A gastric balloon is both a non-surgical and surgical tool used to aid weight loss. The brand and type of balloon you choose to have determines if it is surgical or non-surgical. It is a tool which inflates in your stomach again making you feel full quicker. It is a very effective type of weight loss.
Gastric SleeveThis procedure reduces the size of the stomach by surgically removing a portion of it to create a smaller stomach. Again with the stomach being smaller the person will feel fuller much quicker. Surgical weight loss options are only necessary for morbidly obese people or for people who have a high BMI. If you are considering undergoing a surgical weight loss procedure, consult many surgeons and doctors beforehand.
Please note: these procedures are currently not offered at London Lipo Institute.
