What is mons pubis liposuction?

The mons pubis is the area of tissue which lays over your pubic bone, and which is generally more prominent for women. This is an area which is immune to weight loss through usual methods such as a healthy diet and exercise regime. For people who wish to minimise the size, mons pubis liposuction is the best option.

An enlarged mons pubis can have various different appearances. The mons pubis may protrude more than your liking; in some instances, there is droopy skin or an overhanging. This can not only negatively impact your self-esteem and self-image, but can also alter the style of clothing you wear, making you avoid tight-fitting clothing.

There are numerous reasons for why a mons pubis will become enlarged or appear saggy. This can include weight loss, weight gain, pregnancy, procedures such as a c-section or abdominal surgery, genetics or simply ageing.

Can I have mons pubis liposuction?

Mons pubis liposuction is an appropriate procedure for those who experience:

– An enlarged mons pubis

– Overhanging or sagging skin

– Drooping of the mons pubis area

Those who undergo mons pubis liposuction will also need to be:

– At least 18 years old

– Be in good physical and mental health

– Have good skin elasticity

– Have reasonable expectations about what the procedure can achieve

Those with better skin elasticity may experience better results, however, there is no upper age limit to this procedure and older patients may elect to undergo mons pubis liposuction.

This is a suitable procedure for both women and men.

What happens during mons pubis liposuction?

Before undergoing any medical procedure, you will need to have a consultation with one of the surgeons. They will be able to assess whether or not you are an appropriate candidate for mons pubis liposuction, and will be able to inform you of the best method for surgery.

The procedure will be performed under either a local or general anaesthetic, depending on whether or not you wish to be awake for the procedure.

You will need to ensure you have followed the surgeon’s pre-0p instructions, which include quitting smoking at least two weeks prior to surgery.  Smoking can interfere with the procedure and recovery period. If a patient is found to have been smoking within this time period, the surgery may be cancelled as it can become too risky. You will also have to follow any other pre-op instructions given by your surgeon, such as halting the consumption of alcohol and any fasting periods.

Mons pubis liposuction involves the surgeon making an incision along the groin crease. This is done to ensure the scar from the incision is as minimally visible as possible. A cannula is then used to suction the excess fat from the mons pubis area. A drain will then be placed into the incision area, and the incision will be shut.

What can I expect from the recovery period?

After the procedure, it is normal to experience some minor discomfort, as well as some bruising and swelling. You will be given pain medication to help ease any symptoms.  Swelling will generally resolve after six weeks but may take longer to fully go away.

You will have to wear a compression garment which will help to keep the mons pubis in the best possible shape. This will also help to speed up the recovery period by reducing swelling. This will need to be worn for two to six weeks – your surgeon will be able to advise on how long you will need to wear yours.

You will have to take a few days off work, however, some people may need to take one week off work. You will be able to resume your normal day to day routine after one week.

You will need to avoid any strenuous physical activity for six weeks. This will help you to fully recover and to help avoid any injury to the incision area.

As mons pubis liposuction involves an incision, you will have a scar. The surgeons will ensure this is in the groin crease and is as small as possible, so the scar is not noticeable. The scar will be more visible directly after the procedure, however, with time the scar will minimise in size and change colour to become less prominent.
